Turning Higher HSA Limits into Greater Engagement
The IRS’ recent announcement of higher 2027 health savings account (HSA) contribution limits presents a valuable opportunity for your financial organization. It’s the perfect time to boost your efforts to help HSA owners better understand and maximize one of the most powerful savings vehicles available today.
For 2027, eligible individuals with a self-only high deductible health plan (HDHP) can contribute up to $4,500. Individuals with a family HDHP can contribute up to $9,000, providing even greater potential for tax-advantaged savings. Individuals age 55 and older may contribute an additional $1,000 in catch-up contributions.
At the same time, recent industry data shows that HSAs continue to gain momentum as both healthcare and long-term savings tools. According to the 2025 Year-End Devenir HSA Research Report, the HSA market reached 41.7 million accounts holding nearly $174 billion in assets at the end of 2025, with assets growing 19 percent year over year.
The Education Gap Remains
While HSA adoption continues to grow, many consumers still view their HSA primarily as a checking account for healthcare expenses. They often don’t fully understand the account’s tax advantages, long-term savings potential, or investment opportunities.
This knowledge gap represents a significant opportunity for financial organizations to deepen relationships with HSA owners by providing timely, relevant education that helps them make informed decisions.
The data suggests that consumers who understand HSAs are more likely to use them strategically. In 2025, HSA owners contributed nearly $60 billion while withdrawing approximately $45 billion, leaving about $15 billion in net new assets in the system.
In addition, HSA investment assets reached nearly $85 billion, a 33 percent increase from the previous year, demonstrating growing consumer interest in using HSAs as long-term savings and investment accounts (2025 Year-End Devenir HSA Research Report).
Helping Consumers Unlock HSA Potential
Financial organizations are uniquely positioned to help HSA owners understand how HSAs can support both current healthcare expenses and future financial goals.
With higher 2027 contribution limits, now is an ideal time to remind HSA owners about the benefits of increasing their contributions.
To help our financial partners to meet this need, Ascensus offers a variety of consumer-focused educational resources designed to improve HSA understanding and engagement. These resources can help you strengthen your relationships with your clients and grow your HSA program.
